Off the Strip Trip - Las Vegas
Exploring Las Vegas Off the Strip: A Foodie's Guide to Chinatown and Hidden Gems
When you think of Las Vegas, the neon lights of the Strip often come to mind. But if you’re looking for a more local and authentic experience, there’s a whole world of food, fun, and unique experiences waiting off the beaten path—specifically in Chinatown and surrounding neighborhoods. This vibrant area, just a short distance from the glitzy Strip, is home to some of the best hidden gems in the city, from incredible restaurants to quirky spots for entertainment. Here’s a guide to my favorite places to visit in this underrated area of Las Vegas!
1. Zippy’s Restaurant: A Taste of Hawaii in the Desert
Location: 3900 W Sahara Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89102
Zippy’s is a beloved Hawaiian restaurant that brings a taste of the islands to Las Vegas. Known for its comforting, homestyle Hawaiian dishes, Zippy’s is the go-to spot if you're craving something hearty.
My personal favorite is the Meat Lovers plate, a delicious combination of various meats (including pork, beef, and chicken), all served with traditional sides like rice and macaroni salad. It’s a simple but incredibly satisfying meal that will transport you straight to Hawaii. Whether you’re stopping by for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, Zippy’s never disappoints with its consistent flavors and friendly vibe. It’s a great way to enjoy a unique slice of Hawaiian cuisine without ever leaving the desert.
2. Ramen Boys & Magic Claw Las Vegas: A Perfect Pair for Fun and Food
If you’re craving hearty, comforting ramen, Ramen Boys in Chinatown is the place to go. This cozy spot serves some of the best bowls of ramen in the city, with rich, flavorful broths and fresh, springy noodles that hit the spot every time. Don't forget to cool off with their famous shaved ice, a perfect treat after a warm bowl of ramen. Ramen Boys takes pride in using authentic Kuramoto Ice from Japan for their shaved ice. I ordered the Japanese Mango shaved ice and the serving was enough to share! It was delicious and every spoonful made me so happy in my tummy!
Just next door, you’ll find Magic Claw, a fun, family-friendly spot where you can test your skills on claw machines stuffed with adorable animals. It's not just a place for kids, either—young adults will enjoy the challenge of winning cute prizes. After your ramen fix, a few rounds at Magic Claw are the perfect way to round off a visit to Chinatown.
3. Weera Thai: Vibrant Decor and Bold Flavors
Location: 5040 Spring Mountain Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89146
If you’re in the mood for flavorful Thai cuisine, Weera Thai is an absolute must-visit. Located on the bustling Spring Mountain Road, this restaurant is known for its vibrant Asian decor, with bold colors and a lively ambiance that sets the stage for a great meal.
The menu is packed with mouthwatering Thai dishes, and if you’re a curry lover, their panang curry is a standout. Rich, aromatic, and perfectly spiced, it’s one of my favorites. You can also enjoy a classic Pad Thai, cooked to perfection with just the right balance of sweet, sour, and savory. Whether you’re a spice aficionado or prefer something milder, Weera Thai has options that will cater to all tastes.
4. Mango Mango Dessert: A Mango Lover’s Paradise
Location: 4949 W Spring Mountain Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89146
For those with a sweet tooth, Mango Mango is a dessert spot that’s impossible to miss. Just a stone’s throw away from Wera Thai, this vibrant little place offers everything mango, from ice creams to puddings, to fresh fruit-based treats. It’s the perfect place to cool down and indulge in something sweet after a hearty meal.
On my recent visit, I tried the Mango Sago with Lychee—a refreshing and creamy dessert that combines sweet mango with chewy sago pearls and the aromatic flavor of lychee. It’s a wonderfully light yet satisfying treat, and if you're a mango fan like me, you'll find it hard not to fall in love with everything on the menu at Mango Mango. In addition, their decor is a must-see and incredibly Instagram-worthy.
